Growing Borage, what are the benefits?

This week I sowed a tray of borage seeds. I’ve had borage in other gardens of mine but not in the current one. The bees adore the blue starry flowers.

I’ve heard they can be used in salads but I’ve never tried that myself. When making ice-cubes you can place one flower in each module. They make an attractive and interesting addition to summer drinks.

Some gardeners like to grow borage as a companion plant alongside tomatoes but it can become a bit of a bully. I plan to grow mine in the flower bed and leave it develop into a large plant. Previous plants of mine have grown as thick of an arm! So pick a spot where it can be left to its own devices. They like partial shade as well as full sunshine and can deal with temperatures down to freezing.
